Aligning antimicrobial resistance surveillance with schistosomiasis research: an interlinked One Health approach

  11 June 2024

One Health surveillance analyzes human, animal, and environmental samples to investigate the transmission of pathogens, including drug-resistant bacteria and parasites. The highest rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-associated deaths are observed in sub-Saharan Africa, where schistosomiasis is highly endemic. Knowledge of relationships between bacteria, parasites, and AMR remains inadequate. New research reveals the roles of animals and the environment in AMR and schistosomiasis transmission. Future research should characterize intestinal schistosomiasis and freshwater contact on AMR colonisation.
